When is it a good time to begin remodeling your home or simply working on some home improvement projects? Technically anytime of the year is a great time, but to save the most money on labor and material September through December is an ideal time. Since it is much colder in the winter and in many state (like Oregon) it doesn’t stop raining until very late spring you can’t do much outside. Which is why we have put together a list of four indoor home improvement projects you can complete on a budget before the holidays roll around.

Prepare your home for the colder season

This first one isn’t really a home improvement project but more of a preventative measure to expensive repairs down the road. A few weeks ago we created a 15 step checklist to prepare your home for the fall and we wanted to remind you of a few of those again.

The key steps that you absolutely cannot ignore: replace your air filters, inspect the furnace, repair air drafts, insure safety devices are working properly, and inspect your roof. These 5 will cause the most damage if not taken care of properly as soon as possible.

Check out this infographic checklist we created a few weeks ago for all 15 steps.

Minor Kitchen Remodel

Fall and Winter months is one of the best times to begin working on that kitchen remodel project you have been waiting to start on. With contractors having a more freed up schedule in the fall and winter months you can get lower quotes that are much more affordable than their summer counterparts. Material cost are also much lower in the winter months than they are in the summer. Many stores offer special promotional pricing on tons of products so consider shopping around.

Tile and mosaic backsplash

Give your kitchen a facelift in just one weekend. A tile or mosaic backsplash will add an extra level of luxury to your kitchen for a small cost and very little time. Shop around local suppliers for products that are on markdown or being discontinued for a chance to snatch some for a low cost.

Stone countertops

If you are looking for the ultimate kitchen remodel a new countertop is the next step up. Replace your current countertops with either granite or quartz and completely change the look and feel of your kitchen. We have mentioned this many times: the kitchen is the heart of the home. New counters and a new backsplash will surely wow friends and family once the holidays roll around.

New Appliances

You don’t want to be stuck with a broken oven, refrigerator, or dishwasher thanksgiving day or christmas eve. If your appliances are beginning to act up consider replacing them before they die on you when you need them most. We hear that September and October are the two best months to purchase appliances on sale. Since manufacturers are releasing new models last years appliances can be picked up for much less.

Repaint the Interior of your Home

Spending so much time indoors will make you quickly tired of staring at the same old walls, it doesn’t have to be this way. Give your living room, bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom a new coat of paint and add some "wow" to any room. This is a simple yet very effective improvement that will make your home shine.

If you are an avid do it yourself'er you can pick up paint and tools for pennies and paint any room yourself. Otherwise you can also get inexpensive quotes from local painting contractors on their off season and get the job professionally done. Either way you will get a fresh looking room for a low cost.

Replace, refinish, or repair your floors

Is your carpet getting old and dirty? Is the vinyl or laminate beginning to tear? Or is your once new hardwood beginning to look scuffed up and dull? It might be a good time to make some flooring improvements. Even if you are on a very tight budget you can find flooring options that work for you. Many stores like Divine Hardwood & Stone run special monthly discounts on certain products that can be ordered online and picked up in just a few days.

Hardwood refinishing can be done in one weekend at prices starting at just $2.75 per sqft (request an estimate here) Giving you basically a brand new hardwood floor and a fresh finish that will last for decades for a fraction of the cost to install new floors. Most manufacturers recommend a carpet flooring to go through a deep clean at least once a year. This is an inexpensive procedure that will help make your carpet last much longer than you ever expected.

Vinyl flooring is difficult to repair when it begins to rip or tear, replacing it with laminate or luxury vinyl plank is an easy and inexpensive procedure. You may have read our post a couple months back revealing vinyl flooring as the next trending flooring material for 2016. Vinyl flooring is one of the most advanced materials with exceptional imaging technology where any natural surface can be replicated to the tee on a piece of vinyl or laminate material for a fraction of the cost.

If you are ready to shop around, we recently launched an online store on our website where you can browse products and find discounted hardwood, laminate, tile, as well as order it directly online.

We have a special online sale on our laminate flooring that we know you'll love, so take a look. Laminate starting at just $1.37 per square foot.
